WALTER CLOUGH-TAYLOR: SOLDIER, ARTIST AND PRISONER-OF-WAR

Most of the subjects of this series on talented members of the Royal Welch Fusiliers has focused on writers, poets and artists of the Great War. The Regiment’s cultural contribution during the war is well known, chiefly through the big names like Graves, Sassoon and Wyn Griffith. This series so far has thrown light on some of the now-forgotten members of that cultural class. But what is not generally well known is that there were just as many artists, writers, poets and especially actors in the Regiment during the Second World War. They included, for example, Jack Hawkins; Desmond Llewellyn (‘Q’ in the Bond films); Tony Crosland (Socialist M.P. and writer); Goronwy Rees (Broadcaster and writer); Kyffin Williams; André Morrell (Quatermass and the Pit) and Andrew Cruikshank (Dr Cameron in Dr Finley’s Casebook).
