JULIA STRETTON: A FORGOTTEN ANGLO-WELSH NOVELIST

The novelist Julia Stretton (1812–78) is now largely forgotten, but in her time, she was a popular author of some eleven novels and articles in major periodicals of the day. Her works were widely reviewed and her correspondents included Charles Dickens and Jane Carlyle. She was also published in America. Whilst her style now reads as rather dated, with plots expanded to fit the popular three-volume format, she provided a mirror to mid-nineteenth century society, drawing on her experiences as the wife of Walter Wilkins (later de Winton), an MP and important landowner in Radnorshire and Breconshire, as well as sons and brothers. who served with distinction in the British army, navy and Empire and a childhood in industrial northern England. She therefore deserves to be reintroduced to the canon of Anglo Welsh literature.
