IN THE SHADOW OF WAR: THE CORRESPONDENCE OF ELINED PRYS KOTSCHNIG AND T. GWYNN JONES

Elined Prys Kotschnig was the youngest of the three women who led the celebrated Peace Delegation from the women of Wales to the United States in 1923. Between c.1920 and 1947 she corresponded with poet and pacifist T. Gwynn Jones. The relationship can be added to the still-emerging research on Jones which, albeit of less substantial proportions, joins Elen Ifan’s recent study of his work in the field of musico-poetics in challenging Alun Llywelyn-Williams’s claim in 1971 that ‘so much has been said and written already of Gwynn Jones and his work that there is no hope … to discover anything new about him’. The extant letters display the respect and love in which he and his poetry were held by a young woman almost a quarter of a century his junior. Simultaneously, they open the door to recognition of Elined Prys, whose successful career upon emigration to the USA in the late 1930s has gone under the radar among her compatriots at home, in spite of prominent family influences through her father Owen Prys, principal of Trefeca (later, Aberystwyth) Calvinistic Methodist College.
