THE POLITICAL BAPTISM OF DAVID DAVIES, MP, LLANDINAM

In January 1906 David Davies, Plas Dinam was returned unopposed as the Liberal MP for his native Montgomeryshire, a division which he then continued to represent until 1929. Bizarrely, he had also been seriously considered as the Conservative candidate there too at the same time, and he combined policies and elements from the manifestos of both parties in his election address. This article examines this strange course of events and places his selection in the context of his early life and career and his immense contribution to the life of Montgomeryshire and of Wales. It also looks at his first election in the context of Welsh Liberal politics at that time.
