SIR GEORGE OSBORNE MORGAN: ‘ONE OF WALES’S MOST BRILLIANT SONS, A TRIED FRIEND, AND TRUSTY LEADER

Sir George Osborne Morgan, Q.C., M.P., (1826–1897), was described as ‘the most learned man Wales ever sent to St. Stephen’s’. He represented Denbighshire constituencies for thirty-one years, from 1868 to his death, a period of momentous change in Welsh politics. Morgan garnered encomium at the time of his death, yet he has not retained his rightful place in the Pantheon of Welsh Liberal MPs who were instrumental in bringing Welsh interests to the attention of parliament. It can, however, be demonstrated that Morgan should be evaluated in the context of the prevailing state of Welsh politics, labouring as a pioneer and a reformer during inauspicious times. As such, he paved the way for those later, better-known, Welsh politicians such as David Lloyd George. Morgan’s achievements were amply demonstrated, and included his sustained and persistent role in the passage of pivotal legislation.
