A WELSH GIANT: MEMORIES OF EMYR HUMPHREYS

This lecture celebrates the 100th birthday of the Welsh writer Emyr Humphreys who died in 2020 at the age of 101. M. Wynn Thomas writes as a longstanding personal friend of Emyr Humphreys and also as a distinguished literary critic who has published numerous books and articles discussing Humphreys’ work. In this appraisal, Professor Thomas writes of Humphreys as a great social analyst and satirist of twentieth-century Wales, highlighting his subtle humour and his borderland sensibility derived from his upbringing in Flintshire. As a Welsh learner, Humphreys was committed to Welsh language and culture as the cornerstones of his identity. With reference to some of Humphreys’ most famous novels and most enduring characters, Professor Thomas assesses his enormous impact on Welsh writing in English and hails him as a Welsh European.
