THOMAS JONES’S THE TRIP TO CALAIS: A TALE OF FORMER TIMES

The article contains a commentary and edition of a handwritten text by the Welsh artist Thomas Jones (1742–1803) which he called ‘The Trip to Calais’. Jones’s story describes a journey made by himself and his friend Joseph Farington in 1767, a trip he also records in his Memoirs. The longer account, however, seems to have been written much later, certainly after 1783 and more than likely after 1794, and is a humorous and semi-fictionalized account of the journey, perhaps inspired by other travel literature of the late eighteenth century. This edition of ‘The Trip to Calais’ is the first time this text has been transcribed and edited from the original notebooks in the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth and provides an important insight into the wit and literary ambitions of this iconic Welsh artist.
