THE OPENING OF THE TEMPLE OF PEACE AND HEALTH, CATHAYS PARK, CARDIFF, NOVEMBER 1938

This article examines the background to the design and opening of the Temple of Peace and Health at Cathays Park, Cardiff, on 23 November 1938. It looks at Lord Davies’s heartfelt commitment to the twin causes of the campaign against the scourge of the ‘white peril’ tuberculosis in Wales, especially since the setting up of the Welsh National Memorial Association in 1910, and the cause of international peace and co-operation. Much of the focus is on the laying of the foundation stone by Lord Halifax in April 1937, the formal opening of the impressive edifice during the autumn of the following year, and public responses and reactions to these events.
