THE CYMMRODORION AND WALES: THE INFLUENCE OF THE HONOURABLE SOCIETY ON WELSH INSTITUTIONS

In 2023, the 150th anniversary of the present constitution of the Honourable Society of the Cymmrodorion, this lecture celebrates what could be called a particular Welsh aspect of life, the Welsh institution or organization or society. In many ways the Cymmrodorion could be said to have created the idea of the Welsh society, and this is an aspect which has shaped Welsh life up to the present day. By the end of the eighteenth century, voluntary societies had become a very popular aspect of Welsh life, and there were societies in every region and for all sorts of reasons. The discussion considers the literary societies; as well as societies for political reformers and those which focused on political change; religious societies; educational establishments; charitable organisations; and those which brought about social change such as sick-benefit and societal improvement. The discussion takes in all aspects of societies in Wales up to the present day, and looks at their contribution to Welsh life, culture, language, and society as a whole, the type of organisation which may trace its origins back to the Cymmrodorion society in London in the eighteenth century.
