THE JEWS OF WALES AND WELSH HISTORY WRITING
The history of Wales’s Jews has traditionally been overlooked by scholars of Welsh history and those interested in the history of Jews in modern Britain, who have had little regard for Welsh Jewry. This article seeks to build on those few works that have, in recent years, begun to open up the history of Jews in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Wales. Eschewing both the ‘lachrymose conception’ of Wales’s Jewish past and the notion that Wales was a uniquely compassionate and tolerant nation, this article explores the participation and contributions of Jews to modern Wales and considers their historical legacy against the backdrop of broader Welsh life, industry and commerce.
