KATE WILLIAMS EVANS: SUFFRAGETTE WINDOW-SMASHER AND HUNGER-STRIKER

In the summer of 2018, personal memorabilia which once belonged to Kate Williams Evans, a hitherto little-known suffragette from Montgomeryshire, unexpectedly appeared at auction and was bought by Amgueddfa Cymru–National Museum Wales. The material focuses predominantly on her two-month term of imprisonment in Holloway Gaol, North London, following her conviction for window-smashing in March 1912. This article makes use of the various items in the collection – which include her hunger-strike medal, letters, photographs, books, and other articles – and draws upon a range of other sources to piece together Kate’s story and to place her actions in the context of the women’s suffrage campaign in mid-Wales and beyond. It serves as a reminder that the movement attracted scores of hugely committed, but unsung, individuals from almost every corner of the kingdom.
