GWILYM WILLIAMS (1890–1916) AND DAN YR HELIG: A ROYAL WELCH FUSILIER POET KILLED ON THE WESTERN FRONT ‘UNDER THE WILLOWS’

This is the fourth in a series of articles bringing to light lost writers in poetry and prose from the Great War, and in particular, those who served in The Royal Welch Fusiliers – a Regiment which surpassed all others in producing literary and artistic figures in both World Wars. The subject of this piece is Gwilym Williams of the 17th Battalion of the Regiment. Unlike previous subjects, Williams’s literary career did not extend beyond the war, for he was killed on the Western Front on operations leading up to the Battle of the Somme, in May 1916.
