The June Gruffydd Memorial Lecture

All are welcome to join this talk, which will be live and with questions. Access will be via this page; no registration is needed.

Iorwerth Peate is known in Wales as a poet and man of letters but above all as the founder of the Welsh Folk Museum (now the National Museum of History) at St Fagans; but Peate was also an embellisher of his own mythology. In this lecture one of his successors as head of the Folk Museum will examine Peate’s role in the creation of St Fagans in the context of the National Museum of Wales’s long-expressed aspiration to develop its collection of social history material and present those objects to the public in an open-air museum. The lecture will also look briefly at developments at the site after Peate’s retirement and attempt to evaluate how he would have regarded them.

Speaker: Dr Eurwyn Wiliam

Chaired by John Eifion Jones, President of the Montgomery Society
