Professor Gruffydd Aled Williams grew up in Glyndyfrdwy, Merioneth. After graduating from the Department of Welsh in the University College of North Wales, Bangor, he lectured in Welsh at University College, Dublin from 1965 to 1970. He was appointed to a lectureship at his old Department in Bangor in 1970, being subsequently promoted Senior Lecturer (1984) and Reader (1991). From 1995 until his retirement in 2008 he was Professor of Welsh and Head of the Department of Welsh at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. A specialist in medieval Welsh poetry and Welsh Renaissance literature, he has published Ymryson Edmwnd Prys a Wiliam Cynwal (1986), Dyddiau Olaf Owain Glyndŵr (2015) and over 40 journal articles and book contributions. He was editor of Llên Cymru from 1997 to 2012. In 2010 he delivered the British Academy’s Sir John Rhŷs Memorial Lecture. In 2014 he was elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. He is President of the Merioneth Historical and Records Society.
