SUMMARY:The Jews of Wales
DESCRIPTION:Dr Cai Parry-Jones: Ph.D FRHistS\nCurator and oral historian specialising in digital and Jewish heritage\n \nSYNOPSIS\nCai Parry-Jones‘s book  “The Jews of Wales- A History” is a key study of the presence of Jews in Wales over the centuries starting from the 13th century. However\, as Parry-Jones shows\, there is little mention of Jews in Wales until Jewish communities were first recorded in the 18th Century with major settlement dating from the 19th century. In this introductory talk\, Dr Parry-Jones provides an overview of this relatively unknown aspect of our nation’s history\, as well as answers to some of the most oft-asked questions surrounding the topic. \nCHAIR\nCeridwen Roberts OBE FLSW FAcSSS\, Chair of the Cymmrodorion

SUMMARY:The Novelist Elena Puw Morgan: Rethinking Modernism
DESCRIPTION:In association with the Montgomeryshire Society \nThe June Gruffydd Memorial lecture \nElena Puw Morgan (1900-73) was a pioneering Welsh-language author of the mid-twentieth century. She is best known today through television adaptations of her two major novels\, Y Wisg Sidan / The Silk Gown (1939) and Y Graith / The Scar (1943) on S4C at the turn of the last century. Morgan’s work was critically and popularly acclaimed in its day\, too: she was the first woman to win the Prose Medal at the National Eisteddfod in 1938\, for Y Graith\, and was awarded numerous further Eisteddfod prizes too. At the same time\, Morgan’s moving accounts of women’s lives and hardships in rural Wales found a large popular readership and went into numerous editions\, and later\, radio serialisations. \nThis lecture explores Morgan’s life and work\, and argues that her writing is astonishing in its audacity\, breaking new literary ground in its accounts of themes which were – and indeed\, remain even today – scandalous. This work stands out\, too\, for its compassion and sensitivity towards its characters\, and can be recognised as a major landmark in modern Welsh writing. \nSpeaker: Dr Mererid Puw Davies FLSW Associate Professor\, Head of German at UCL \nIn the chair: John Jones\, Chair of the Montgomeryshire Society

SUMMARY:BILINGUALISMS AND MULTILINGUALISMS IN MEDIEVAL WALES
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion /  Learned Society of Wales / Lecture \nChair: Professor Thomas Charles-Edwards \nSpeaker: Professor Paul Russell\, Professor Of Celtic\, Department Of Anglo-Saxon\, Norse And Celtic\, University Of Cambridge \nLocation: Room 0.31 in the John Percival Building\, Cardiff University\, Cathays Campus\, Colum Drive\, CF10 3EU \nSynopsis \nThe degree and nature of language contact in medieval Wales between speakers of Welsh and English (or Anglo-Norman or indeed Flemish) tend to be calculated in terms of numbers and types of loanwords as the most visible evidence for contact; these can then be calibrated against other narrative sources for contact. Work on bilingualism and multilingualism in the medieval Britain has made considerable strides over the last few years\, though largely (and with only a few exceptions\, such as the contributions by Helen Fulton) it has been concerned with English and French. More generally again in recent years modern linguistic theories of language contact have been profitably been applied to the ancient and medieval worlds. All of this work might allow us to think in different ways about the linguistic situation in medieval Wales. For example\, what linguistic situations (if any) can be inferred from the use of particular loanwords? Or conversely\, given particular documented situations in which the Welsh and the English had to communicate with one another\, such as the Dunsaetan Agreement\, how do we suppose they did it? Did it matter where one was located in Wales? Again\, how much weight should be put on claims of linguistic competence in different historical contexts? This paper considers a number of different scenarios from medieval Wales in the light of recent work on language contact.
