Mae’r erthygl yn egluro’r heriau a wynebodd Edwards a’r ffordd y trawsnewidiodd ei gorff o arolygwyr trwy benodi arolygwyr o Gymru a fedrai’r Gymraeg a gosod amcanion newydd i’w gwaith hwy ac i waith ysgolion. Rhoddodd flaenoriaeth i’r Gymraeg ac i Gymreictod y cwrs addysg a chael gwell llwyddiant mewn ysgolion elfennol nag mewn ysgolion canolradd. Eglurir y rhwystrau a’r grymoedd y ceisiodd eu goresgyn dros gyfnod ei yrfa a rhoddir gwerthusiad o natur y llwyddiant a gafodd. \nSpeaker: Ann Keane\, Cyn Brif Arolygydd y Mawrhydi dros Addysg a Hyfforddiant yng Nghymru \nIn the chair: Sioned Bowen\, Member of Council

SUMMARY:Ben Bowen Thomas\, Wales\, and UNESCO
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join this talk\, which will be live and with questions. \nBen Bowen Thomas was one of the most influential Welsh adult educators and civil servants of the twentieth century. He was very well-known among those who\, like himself\, were prominent civil servants but perhaps less well known to the Welsh public generally. Thomas’ early career was given to adult education in Wales\, an important social\, cultural\, as well as educational movement in the first half of the century. Warden of Coleg Harlech (1927-1940) and Director of Extra-Mural Studies\, University College\, Aberystwyth (1940-1941)\, he was seconded to the Ministry of Labour and National Service in Wales\, beginning a civil service career in which he became Permanent Secretary to the Welsh Department\, Ministry of Education (1945–63). This lecture examines Thomas’ contribution to international educational and cultural development in the light of this experience; and through his long association with UNESCO after 1946 in which he became Chair of its Executive Board (1958- 1960). This was a period of post-war reconstruction in a divided Europe riven by the competing ideologies of communist state socialism and capitalist parliamentary democracy. It also saw a retreat from imperialism and the emergence of post-colonial non-aligned countries. UNESCO reflected these tensions and received severe criticism notably from the United States for its allegedly pro-Soviet and anti-Western bias. Thomas was knighted in 1950\, was a member of the Commission on the Constitution (1969–73)\, and was awarded the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion Medal (1976). \nProfessor W. John Morgan\nProfessor Emeritus\, University of Nottingham; Honorary Professor\, School of Social Sciences\, and Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow\, Wales Institute of Social & Economic Research\, and Data\, Cardiff University. \nChaired by Sian Reid\, Honorary Secretary

SUMMARY:Paper\, Ink\, and Four Walls: John Jones of Gellilyfdy and his Prison Project
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join this talk\, which will be live and with questions. Access will be via this page; no registration is needed. \nAlmost all scholars of medieval Welsh texts will have come across manuscripts in the hand of John Jones of Gellilyfdy\, Flintshire (c.1580–1658)\, a competent scribe who copied countless texts\, of prose and poetry\, in a beautifully clear calligraphic hand\, often decorated with his signature knotwork and ornate capital letters. However\, John Jones was no mere copyist and there is plenty of evidence that he was working towards producing a Welsh dictionary. Whilst incarcerated in the Fleet Prison in London (as a debtor) in the early 1630s\, he produced three books of wordlists\, covering many aspects of everyday life. The lists provide us with an invaluable insight into the life and language of a Flintshire-based gentleman in the early 17th century\, whilst also adding greatly to the known Welsh vocabulary of the period. \nProfessor Ann Parry Owen\, University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh & Celtic Studies and University of Wales Dictionary \nChaired by Professor Helen Fulton\, Member of Council

SUMMARY:“I have a dream”? Iorwerth Cyfeiliog Peate and the creation of the Welsh Folk Museum
DESCRIPTION:In association with the Montgomeryshire Society\nThe June Gruffydd Memorial Lecture \nAll are welcome to join this talk\, which will be live and with questions. Access will be via this page; no registration is needed. \nIorwerth Peate is known in Wales as a poet and man of letters but above all as the founder of the Welsh Folk Museum (now the National Museum of History) at St Fagans; but Peate was also an embellisher of his own mythology. In this lecture one of his successors as head of the Folk Museum will examine Peate’s role in the creation of St Fagans in the context of the National Museum of Wales’s long-expressed aspiration to develop its collection of social history material and present those objects to the public in an open-air museum. The lecture will also look briefly at developments at the site after Peate’s retirement and attempt to evaluate how he would have regarded them. \nSpeaker: Dr Eurwyn Wiliam \nChaired by John Eifion Jones\, President of the Montgomery Society

SUMMARY:The Legacy of the Peace Movement in Wales 1914-1918
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join this talk\, which will be live and with questions. Access will be via this page; no registration is needed. \nThis talk analyses the impact of the Opposition to the Great War in Wales\, and how it influenced attitudes through the twenties and thirties through to the Second World War. \nWhat happened to those conscientious objectors and others who resisted the war effort and whose principles were challenged by the economic ruin of the twenties and rise of fascism in the 1930s? This lecture will consider the fate of the out and out pacifists as well as those who had pledged that there would be no more war. \nDr Aled Eirug\, retired senior lecturer\, Swansea University. \nChaired by Professor Stuart Cole CBE.

SUMMARY:Genius making its habitation among us: the musical vision for Wales of Walford Davies
DESCRIPTION:Dr Rhian Davies: Artistic Director\, Gregynog Festival and Honorary Fellow\, Bangor University \nHenry Walford Davies (1869-1941) was Director of the National Council of Music for Wales (1918-41)\, Gregynog Professor of Music at Aberystwyth University (1919-26)\, and Edward Elgar’s successor as Master of the King’s Musick (1934-41). Dr Rhian Davies explores the life and work of this charismatic musician and broadcaster whose trailblazing initiatives ‘to further the expression of Welsh nationality in music’ were bankrolled by the ‘boundless generosity’ of Gwendoline and Margaret Davies. \nThis lecture has moved from 20 October. \nChaired by: Michael Gibbon QC\, Member of Council

SUMMARY:Designing Wales: an archive for Welsh architecture
DESCRIPTION:Dr Peter Wakelin\, writer and curator specializing in built heritage and visual art. \nThis online lecture will be live\, with questions from the audience. \nArchitectural drawings\, models and photographs are crucial for understanding architecture in Wales. However\, the records of individual practices have often been at risk of loss and finding and using architectural papers can be challenging. This illustrated talk will explore some of the richest Welsh architectural records and their potential applications – in research\, education\, management of the built environment and inspiration for contemporary design. It will describe the new project to encourage the preservation and use of architectural archives led by the Royal Society of Architects in Wales in collaboration with the principal archival bodies. \nDr Peter Wakelin writes about art and heritage. He undertook the feasibility study that led to the formation of Architectural Archives Advisory Panel for Wales in 2019. He was formerly Secretary of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales and Director of Collections at Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales. \nChaired by: Rhian Medi Roberts\, Member of Council \n

SUMMARY:The Jews of Wales
DESCRIPTION:Dr Cai Parry-Jones: Ph.D FRHistS\nCurator and oral historian specialising in digital and Jewish heritage\n \nSYNOPSIS\nCai Parry-Jones‘s book  “The Jews of Wales- A History” is a key study of the presence of Jews in Wales over the centuries starting from the 13th century. However\, as Parry-Jones shows\, there is little mention of Jews in Wales until Jewish communities were first recorded in the 18th Century with major settlement dating from the 19th century. In this introductory talk\, Dr Parry-Jones provides an overview of this relatively unknown aspect of our nation’s history\, as well as answers to some of the most oft-asked questions surrounding the topic. \nCHAIR\nCeridwen Roberts OBE FLSW FAcSSS\, Chair of the Cymmrodorion

SUMMARY:The Novelist Elena Puw Morgan: Rethinking Modernism
DESCRIPTION:In association with the Montgomeryshire Society \nThe June Gruffydd Memorial lecture \nElena Puw Morgan (1900-73) was a pioneering Welsh-language author of the mid-twentieth century. She is best known today through television adaptations of her two major novels\, Y Wisg Sidan / The Silk Gown (1939) and Y Graith / The Scar (1943) on S4C at the turn of the last century. Morgan’s work was critically and popularly acclaimed in its day\, too: she was the first woman to win the Prose Medal at the National Eisteddfod in 1938\, for Y Graith\, and was awarded numerous further Eisteddfod prizes too. At the same time\, Morgan’s moving accounts of women’s lives and hardships in rural Wales found a large popular readership and went into numerous editions\, and later\, radio serialisations. \nThis lecture explores Morgan’s life and work\, and argues that her writing is astonishing in its audacity\, breaking new literary ground in its accounts of themes which were – and indeed\, remain even today – scandalous. This work stands out\, too\, for its compassion and sensitivity towards its characters\, and can be recognised as a major landmark in modern Welsh writing. \nSpeaker: Dr Mererid Puw Davies FLSW Associate Professor\, Head of German at UCL \nIn the chair: John Jones\, Chair of the Montgomeryshire Society

SUMMARY:BILINGUALISMS AND MULTILINGUALISMS IN MEDIEVAL WALES
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion /  Learned Society of Wales / Lecture \nChair: Professor Thomas Charles-Edwards \nSpeaker: Professor Paul Russell\, Professor Of Celtic\, Department Of Anglo-Saxon\, Norse And Celtic\, University Of Cambridge \nLocation: Room 0.31 in the John Percival Building\, Cardiff University\, Cathays Campus\, Colum Drive\, CF10 3EU \nSynopsis \nThe degree and nature of language contact in medieval Wales between speakers of Welsh and English (or Anglo-Norman or indeed Flemish) tend to be calculated in terms of numbers and types of loanwords as the most visible evidence for contact; these can then be calibrated against other narrative sources for contact. Work on bilingualism and multilingualism in the medieval Britain has made considerable strides over the last few years\, though largely (and with only a few exceptions\, such as the contributions by Helen Fulton) it has been concerned with English and French. More generally again in recent years modern linguistic theories of language contact have been profitably been applied to the ancient and medieval worlds. All of this work might allow us to think in different ways about the linguistic situation in medieval Wales. For example\, what linguistic situations (if any) can be inferred from the use of particular loanwords? Or conversely\, given particular documented situations in which the Welsh and the English had to communicate with one another\, such as the Dunsaetan Agreement\, how do we suppose they did it? Did it matter where one was located in Wales? Again\, how much weight should be put on claims of linguistic competence in different historical contexts? This paper considers a number of different scenarios from medieval Wales in the light of recent work on language contact.
