SUMMARY:Wales in the Media
DESCRIPTION:The next talk in the Wales Matters series looking at contemporary issues of importance to Wales will focus on the information the Welsh public obtains through the news media available to it.  \nIfan Morgan Jones\nHead of Digital Media\, S4C \nMonday 17th March\, 6.30 for 7pm\nLondon Welsh Centre\, 157 Gray’s Inn Road\, London WC1X 8UE \nSocial media has cut a swathe through previous methods of news dissemination to the detriment of traditional news sources. How much has been lost with the decline of the printed media and of traditional broadcasting and how well is the Welsh public being served by online providers at a time when there are many issues crucial to the future of Wales as a society to be discussed? \nIn a globalised world dominated by large corporations is there still room and indeed an appetite for a Welsh voice and if not\, what threat does this pose to participative democracy in small territories such as Wales? \nThese and other issues will be discussed by our speaker Ifan Morgan Jones\, founder of Nation.Cymru and now Head of Digital Media at S4C. If you believe this is one of the key issues facing modern Wales\, do come along to hear the talk and join the debate.\nAll are welcome.  Admission is free but please book here.  \nWales Matters is a joint initiative of the Cymmrodorion\, the London Welsh Centre and Wales in London. Previous talks have focused on Wales’s Competitiveness\, Education\, the Crisis in the Arts\, and Devolution.

SUMMARY:Amgyffred yr Amgylchedd yn Oes Gerallt Gymro / Perceptions of the Environment in the Age of Gerald of Wales
DESCRIPTION:Yr Athro Huw Pryce FRHistS FLSW\nAthro Emeritws Hanes Cymru\, Prifysgol Bangor \nProfessor Huw Pryce FRHistS FLSW\nProfessor Emeritus of Welsh History\, Bangor University \nAwyr iachus Maenor-bŷr\, afancod Afon Teifi\, mynyddoedd geirwon Meirionnydd: dyna ond ychydig o agweddau ar hinsawdd\, natur a thirwedd Cymru a ddisgrifiwyd yn llawnach nag erioed o’r blaen gan yr awdur Lladin toreithiog Gerallt Gymro (c.1146–c.1223). Eto\, er mor fyw yw’r disgrifiadau arloesol hyn\, prin eu bod yn gyflawn\, gan eu bod yn adlewyrchu safbwynt eglwyswr dysgedig a rannai uchelgais drefedigaethol ei berthnasau yn y Mers. Bydd y ddarlith hon yn trafod arwyddocâd gweithiau Gerallt fel ffynhonnell ar gyfer deall yr amgylchedd yng Nghymru’r oesoedd canol. \nThe healthy air of Manorbier\, the beavers of the River Teifi\, the rugged mountains of Meirionnydd: those are only a few aspects of Wales’s climate\, nature and landscape that were described more fully than ever before by the prolific Latin author Gerald of Wales (c.1146–c.1223). Yet\, notwithstanding the liveliness of these pioneering descriptions\, they are far from comprehensive\, as they reflect the perspective of a learned churchman who shared the colonizing ambitions of his Marcher relatives. This lecture will discuss the significance of Gerald’s writings as a source for understanding the environment in medieval Wales. \nSimultaneous translation into English will be provided

SUMMARY:Wales Matters: A higher education system in Wales or for Wales? The crisis facing Welsh universities.
DESCRIPTION:The financial and other challenges facing universities in Wales\, as in the UK more generally\, have been widely reported.
